Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses in Kenya: A Low-Budget Plan

Pick one or two platforms where your customers already spend time, post three useful things a week, and send every interested person to a place where they can buy or book, usually WhatsApp. Measure messages and sales, not likes.

Step 1: choose where to show up

You do not need every platform. Choose by where your customers are, and do those well.

PlatformGood forWhat tends to work
FacebookLocal customers, groups, Pages, Marketplace, adsPhotos with prices, local offers, customer reviews
InstagramVisual products such as fashion, food, beauty and designReels, stories, before-and-after photos
TikTokReaching new people with short videosDemonstrations, behind-the-scenes, quick tips
LinkedInServices sold to other businessesCase studies, advice for managers and founders
WhatsAppClosing the saleFast replies, catalogue, payment details

Step 2: set one goal

Choose a number you can count, for example "10 serious enquiries on WhatsApp each week" or "5 bookings a month". Every post and ad should help reach it. Likes and followers feel good but do not pay your rent.

Step 3: post four kinds of content

A simple rhythm is three posts a week, for example Monday (teach), Wednesday (proof) and Friday (offer). Always end with one action, such as "Send us a message on WhatsApp".

Step 4: run a small first ad

  1. Choose a post that already did well, or make a new one with a real photo or video.
  2. In Meta's advertising tools, pick the goal that sends people to messages (WhatsApp or Messenger). Menu names change, so choose the option that matches this goal.
  3. Target people in your town or county, within the age range of your customers.
  4. Start with a test budget you can afford to lose, for example KES 300 to 500 a day for five to seven days.
  5. Show the price and a clear action. Stop any ad that spends money and brings no messages after a few days.

Step 5: measure every week

NumberHow to get itWhy it matters
Messages receivedCount new WhatsApp chats from social mediaShows interest
Cost per messageAd spend divided by messagesShows which ads are worth the money
Sales or bookingsCount the enquiries that paidShows what really works
Best post of the weekMost messages or sharesMake more like it

A four-week starter plan

  1. Week 1, set up: complete your profiles, add your WhatsApp link to every bio and take ten good photos.
  2. Week 2, post: publish three times and ask five happy customers for a photo or a review.
  3. Week 3, advertise: run your first small ad on your best post.
  4. Week 4, review: look at the numbers, stop what did not work and do more of what did.
